About 40 current and former Southeastern Louisiana University staffers wrongly benefited from more than $30,000 in free on-campus meals and other purchases from 2000 to 2008, according to a legislative audit report released Monday.

SLU self-reported the misappropriations of funds last year after an employee whistle-blower brought the allegations to light, according to the audit report.

SLU has since revamped its campus card operations and meal plan policies, said John Crain, the new SLU president.

Also, the campus card operations director and the accounting coordinator who headed up the alleged wrongdoing have resigned and paid restitution, the report states.

Paul Pendas, director of financial audits for the legislative auditor, credited the university and former SLU President Randy Moffett for discovering the problems last year, reporting them and taking action.

Pendas said the local district attorney was notified for a possible criminal investigation.

Also, the state Board of Ethics was contacted about some of the free employee meal plans to determine if there were ethical breaches.

Crain said the problems revolved around two separate but related issues.

The most serious problem was in the campus card operations office concerning the SLU Lion’s Lagniappe card, which is essentially a campus debit card for purchases ranging from food to textbooks, Crain said.

The identities of the former campus card operation director and accounting coordinator were not immediately provided Monday upon a public records request. Crain said he did not remember their names.

The accounting coordinator fraudulently manipulated the magnetic strip on her Lagniappe card to absorb the leftover funds from the accounts of former students, according to the report. This activity totaled more than $2,000.

She also placed an additional $3,317 in Aramark meal plan dollars on her account without consent, the report states.

She put nearly $3,000 on the former office director’s account as well and more than $2,000 on the accounts of three other employees in that office, according to the report.
