GONZALES — A man convicted in November 2006 of armed robbery, carjacking and aggravated kidnapping was sentenced Thursday to 50 years in prison, 23rd Judicial District Attorney Ricky Babin said Tuesday.

Terrell Stipe, 32, 319 Post St., in the Killona community in St. James Parish, was tried and convicted in Calcasieu Parish after state District Judge Alvin Turner granted a change of venue because of pre-trial publicity.

Stipe was convicted of pointing an assault rifle at Lakeith Mitchell, of Gonzales, forcing his way into Mitchell’s car and making him drive away from a convenience store and later stealing the car from Mitchell.

After the November 2006 conviction, Turner deferred sentencing pending a pre-sentence investigation.

On Thursday, Stipe was sentenced to 50 years in prison for his armed robbery conviction and 10 years for his carjacking conviction, the sentences to run concurrently, Babin said.

Assistant District Attorney Shawn Bush said the delay in sentencing was the result of several factors, including the fact that the pre-sentence investigation had to be redone because the aggravated kidnapping charge was not brought before a grand jury as required by law.

Additionally, Bush said, coordinating a sentencing date with the 14th Judicial District Court in Calcasieu Parish where Stipe was convicted delayed the sentencing.

Stipe also faces murder charges in the slaying of Keelan Irvin, 25, in December 2005.

St. James sheriff’s deputies found Irvin’s body in the woods off La. 6412 in Gramercy.

Bush said she is prosecuting that case, too.
