College Knowledge Nights set Thursday
Parents of middle-school students can learn more about how to help their children earn college degrees during College Knowledge Nights.

Events in Acadiana will be 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Milton Elementary/Middle School Library and the Patterson Junior High School cafeteria in Patterson.

The Louisiana Board of Regents, Office of Student Financial Assistance and Louisiana GEAR UP have a goal of working together to better educate parents and students about the opportunities available and the requirements that must be met for a student to be eligible for college.

Prom dresses to be given away Saturday

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s AmeriCorps program is collecting prom dresses that will be given away to high school students on Saturday at the United Way building, 215 E. Pinhook Road.

The giveaway starts at 10 a.m. and concludes at 3 p.m.

The program was started last year by Amanda Noble, a ULL nursing student and AmeriCorps member.

Last year, more than 200 dresses were donated, and more than 50 girls received dresses. This year’s goal is to collect 300 dresses and help at least 100 girls, Noble said.

Anyone interested in donating a dress, shoes or accessories can do so at the drop-off site at Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic Church. Or, call AmeriCorps to arrange for pickup at (337) 262-1360.

A variety of sizes, styles and colors will be available. Students must show a current identification to participate in the giveaway. Spa gift certificates and others will also be given.

Scholarship program taking applications

The St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for the Louisiana Sheriffs’ Scholarship Program.

A $500 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating high school student in St. Martin Parish.

There are no restrictions on the purposes for which scholarships are spent. The only limitations are that the applicants be permanent residents of Louisiana, and students must be enrolled as full-time, undergraduate students.

Applications must be submitted to Maj. Ginny Higgins at the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office by April 1. Additionally, applicants must be eligible for admission to the school indicated on their application. The award will be paid only for attendance at state schools. All scholarship winners will be announced by May 1.

For further information regarding the program, contact Higgins at the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office at (337) 394-2618.
