NAPOLEONVILLE — The Assumption Parish Police Jury voted Wednesday to approve a change in ordinance that would allow it to shut down a business found to be delinquent by three months or more in paying its occupational license fees or bursar fees.

Police Jury President Martin Triche said the amendment would grant the parish power through the 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office to find cause why a business alleged to be in violation should be brought to court and told to cease operations until fees are paid.

“It’s just a procedural mechanism that gives us the power to enforce that action,” Triche told the jurors.

During a public hearing on the matter, Sheriff Mike Waguespack told the jury he felt the measure “helps to clean up the legal process” in regard to occupational license fee collections.

The Sheriff’s Office is also in charge of collecting all occupational license fees in the parish.

The jury also voted to hold a public meeting prior to its March 11 meeting to discuss possible grants the parish hopes to obtain from the Louisiana Recovery Authority for hurricane recovery efforts.

At the meeting, jurors plan to discuss potential projects that could be funded by the grants.

Triche mentioned numerous projects that could fall under the grants’ allowances, including a possible parishwide recreation center in Napoleonville.

John Boudreaux, director of the parish’s Office of Emergency Preparedness, said that Assumption Parish ranked seventh in Louisiana in the amount of damage incurred from hurricanes Gustav and Ike last fall.

Triche said he and Boudreaux would meet to complete a list of projects the parish would submit in its bid package.

On another topic, Waguespack told the jury he expects roads in the area of No Problem Raceway in Belle Rose to see heavy volume this weekend, as Speed Channel will be filming for its drag racing series, “Pinks All Out” at the track beginning today.

Waguespack said deputies from his and neighboring agencies will be on hand to direct traffic in the area during the three-day event.
In other matters, Rick Louque, Assumption Parish agent for LSU Cooperative Extension Office, also presented his office’s annual report to the jury.

The report included agricultural and horticultural highlights for the parish, as well as information on health and nutrition initiatives and activities by the parish’s 4-H Club.
