Thieves hit 11 vehicles in WBR
Thieves broke into 11 cars and trucks early Monday in the Riverside and Oak Alley subdivisions off of La. 1 in West Baton Rouge Parish, making off with wallets, purses, cash, credit cards, a handgun, a laptop computer and other items, police said.
West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Detective Kevin Cyrus said the rash of burglaries took place in the early morning hours in the two neighborhoods, just north of Brusly.
Investigators believe the thieves live in the Gardere Lane and Burbank Drive area of Baton Rouge, Cyrus said.
He said the thieves drove to the subdivisions in a compact car and used stolen bicycles to move among houses in a three-block area, stealing from the vehicles.
Police got their first call at 3:45 a.m., when a resident reported finding a young male in his vehicle. The homeowner said the thief ran off, jumping a fence, and had left behind a bicycle, Cyrus said.
He said police received more calls around 5 a.m. as other people getting ready for work discovered their vehicles had been burglarized.
“There was no sign of forced entry,” Cyrus said. “There were no broken windows. They were grabbing things that were easy to take.”
He said investigators know that at least two people, and possibly more, were involved in the thefts.
Anyone with information about the thefts is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 344-STOP, Cyrus said.
