Slain lawyer’s husband in prison without bond

The husband of slain Baton Rouge lawyer Chiquita Tate remained in Parish Prison Saturday night with no bond set in connection with an arrest warrant for an alleged domestic abuse incident in 2007, police said.

No arrests had been made and no suspects had been named Saturday in the killing of Tate on Friday, Baton Rouge Police Department spokesman Cpl. L’Jean McKneely said.

District Attorney Hillar Moore said Saturday that police were continuing to process the crime scene, “and they’ve requested the State Police Crime Lab to expedite analyzing the evidence.”

Homicide detectives pressed their investigation into the fatal stabbing of Tate, 34, whose body was discovered about 6 a.m. Friday in her downtown law office in the State National Life Building, 263 Third Street, said McKneely.

Officers located Tate after receiving a 911 call from Tate’s husband, Gregory Harris, who wanted someone to check on his wife, McKneely said.

Harris, 37, 3514 Charry Drive in Baker, was booked into parish prison around 2:30 a.m. Saturday with simple battery/domestic violence and with failing to appear in court in January or February 2008, said Baker Police Chief Mike Knaps.

Knaps said it was likely that Harris would be contacted Monday by Judge Kirk Williams of Baker City Court. It would be up to Williams to determine what type of bond to set for Harris in the domestic abuse case, Knaps added.

Knaps said Harris’ early Saturday arrest stemmed from a Dec. 22, 2007,  incident involving Harris and Tate at the couple’s Charry Drive home. Harris arrived at the residence and questioned Tate about where she had been. Knaps said the couple, who were not married at the time, argued and Harris shoved Tate down onto the bed.

Baker police called to the home observed Tate with fresh scratches and red marks on her arms and shoulders, Knaps said.
Baton Rouge police detained and questioned Harris Friday  because he was the one who called 911 and asked that police check on his wife, McKneely said.

McKneely said the initial investigation revealed that somebody entered the private suite that housed Tate’s office and stabbed her multiple times. He called the killing “an isolated incident,” and added that “there is no concern” the killer poses a threat to anyone else downtown.

Police also had Harris’ black Mercedes and Tate’s maroon Hummer towed away from a parking lot near Tate’s office.

McKneely said the vehicles would be searched for evidence.
