State Police ID suspect in hit-and-run fatality
GALLIANO — Louisiana State Police have identified the fugitive driver facing prosecution in the hit-and-run death of a Lafourche Parish man on the day after Christmas, according to a news release.
Santiago Osorio Rodriguez, 31, of Golden Meadow, is the owner of a 1998 Ford Escort that struck and killed Dwain Carrell, 55, Cut Off, on La. 3235 just north of the Galliano Wal-Mart on Dec. 26, State Police reported.
Troopers secured a warrant Friday for the arrest of Rodriguez, who faces prosecution on counts of felony hit-and-run, operating a vehicle without lawful presence in the United States, and driving without a driver’s license.
On Jan. 5, troopers learned the Escort believed to have run over the victim was at a south Lafourche Parish mechanic’s shop and the owner had stripped the vehicle’s parts and sent the shell of the vehicle to Southern Scrap in Houma, according to the news release.
Crime scene investigators confirmed that damage to the Escort’s front hood, door, bumper and left front fender was consistent with striking a person and also matched the headlight assembly to debris found at the scene of the crash, authorities reported.
Also last week, an informant came forward with information that Rodriguez was driving the Escort when it struck the victim, police said.
Carrell was on foot and removing debris from the highway in front of his residence about 7 p.m. Dec. 26 when he was struck and killed, troopers said.
State Police asked anyone with information on the whereabouts of Rodriguez to call Troop C at (985) 857-3680.
