VILLE PLATTE — Gilbert “Winky” Aucoin updated the Evangeline Parish Police Jury on Monday about spring’s Dewey Balfa Cajun and Creole Cultural Week at nearby Chicot State Park.

Slated for April 17-24, it is sponsored by Louisiana Folk Roots.

The Police Jury approved entering into a cooperative agreement with the nonprofit group to provide labor and equipment to help erect tents for the event. The jury also approved a permit for the sale of beer, wine and liquor during those dates.

Aucoin said reservation requests are still coming in from all over the world for people wishing to attend the daily classes in music, cooking and dancing.

Visitors from the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Germany and Canada as well as many states have booked space at the event.

Something new this year is the partnership between Louisiana Folk Roots and the French government.

Through its consul general, France is sponsoring a 10-piece group to perform at Chicot State Park.

In other business, District Attorney Trent Brignac, sworn into office earlier in the day, introduced his Assistant District Attorney Marcus Fontenot, who will become the jury’s new legal adviser.

Brignac also told the jury he will have two full-time assistants in Betsy Jackson and Nicole Gil.

The Police Jury also approved creation of a new parishwide Keep America Beautiful and Litter Control Committee. The committee is made up of Police Juror Bryan Vidrine, Sheriff Eddie Soileau, Pine Prairie Mayor Terry Savant, Basile Mayor Berline Sonnier and residents Nina David, Scott Fontenot, Pam McGee, Furmin Guillory, Sam Johnson and Jim Robinson. The committee will be eligible to obtain federal grant funds.

In other action the Police Jury:
  • Set April 4 for a special election to fill the unexpired term of District 8 Police Juror Ronald T. Doucet who was elected Ward 1 City Marshal.
  • Re-elected President Bob Manuel and Vice President Eric Soileau for another term.
