Retired LSU official Summers dies
Teresa A. Summers, a retired LSU professor of human ecology and administrator, died Saturday in Baton Rouge after a long battle with cancer. She was 60.
LSU System President John Lombardi, in a news release, said that Summers’ “imprint appears in many places as a force for those academic qualities that define high quality and dedicated service.”
An expert in apparel merchandising and Internet marketing strategies, Summers spent 33 years at LSU after joining the faculty as a researcher in 1975.
She was named Louisiana Professor of the Year in 2001. She described winning the award as “very humbling” and “beyond what I ever aspired to achieve.”
During her career at LSU, Summers served as associate dean of the College of Agriculture, where she taught 15 different courses focusing on the science and design of textiles and apparel and product development. She would later serve as an assistant vice president for academic affairs.
Summers developed the first international field study program in LSU’s College of Agriculture and established the LSU System Task Force on Diversity.
LSU System President Emeritus William L. Jenkins, in a news release, described Summers as a “magnificent faculty member” who was loved and respected by her students.
“She contributed a great deal within her own discipline but also was a fine person who was deeply, deeply committed to the advancement of LSU and the state,” Jenkins said.
Summers is survived by her husband Dennis, her daughter, Joanna Summers, of St. Augustine, Fla.; her mother, Estelle Anderson, of Colfax; her sister, Peggy Laird, of Austin, Texas, and numerous other relatives.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
