ABBEVILLE — The Vermilion Parish School Board nominated businessmen Lloyd Suire and Judge Edwards to be appointed to the White Lake Advisory Board by Gov. Bobby Jindal, pending approval by the state Senate Advisory Committee.
At a regular meeting Thursday, Suire was suggested by board member Bill Searle, while Edwards was nominated by board member Anthony Fontana.
Opening discussions on School Board nominations, Searle said Suire would make a good candidate because he was a successful businessman and did work for the While Lake Land Co.
Fontana said his candidate was highly qualified for the position.
“Judge Edwards is a very strong conservationist,” he said of his candidate for the board.
“He has been very involved with the coastal erosion program and would be a good person for the board.”
Both nominations were unanimously accepted by the board to be sent to the Governor’s Office for ratification and the Senate for final approval.
According to board attorney Calvin Woodruff, White Lake is a large pristine wildlife management area south of Gueydan.
He said the area is managed by the state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, and by law, the board is composed of professionals in wildlife management, biological scientists and Vermilion residents appointed by the governor after the state acquired the land from Amoco as part of a litigation settlement.
Members of environmental groups such as the Sierra Club and Audubon Society and local universities such as University of Louisiana at Lafayette and Louisiana State University are also appointed to the White Lake Advisory Board.
“The advisory board meets regularly to manage the area, which is one of the most-beautiful, pristine, wildlife refuges in the U.S.,” Woodruff said.
