Juvenile porn on laptop leads to coach’s arrest
LIVONIA — A math teacher and girls basketball coach at Livonia High School was arrested and booked with indecent behavior with a juvenile and pornography involving a juvenile, the Police Department said.
Antonio Garcia, 33, is accused of possessing pornographic images of a minor on his laptop computer and sending “inappropriate” text messages to a 16-year-old female student at the high school over the course of several weeks, law enforcement officials said.
If convicted of pornography involving a juvenile, Garcia faces a prison term of two to 10 years, a $10,000 fine, or both.
A conviction of indecent behavior with a juvenile could bring up to seven years in prison, a $5,000 fine, or both, officials said.
Pointe Coupee School Superintendent Dan Rawls said Garcia, a first-year employee at the school, was placed on paid administrative leave in mid-December. Garcia resigned Wednesday morning from his position at the school, Rawls said.
Livonia Police Chief Brad Joffrion said his department received a tip from the parent of a 16-year-old girl about the alleged misconduct on Dec. 16.
The parent told police the improper conduct had been going on for a few weeks before the girl’s family found out, Joffrion said.
When police learned that the alleged misconduct involved a cell phone and a laptop computer, Livonia police contacted the Louisiana Attorney General’s High-Tech Crime Unit.
Mike Johnson, director of the unit, said his agency seized Garcia’s computer and cell phone and discovered enough evidence on those devices to prosecute Garcia.
After a three-week investigation, Garcia surrendered to the Livonia Police Department without incident on Tuesday and was booked into the Pointe Coupee Detention Center.
Prior to Tuesday’s arrest, police said, Garcia had a clean criminal record.
As of late Wednesday, Garcia, 8800 BMG Drive, Livonia, remained in the detention center on a $500,000 bond.
