Two held in Tangipahoa after shootout
AMITE — Tangipahoa Parish sheriff’s deputies arrested two men in connection with a shootout after one of them tried to enter a home in the Amite area, deputies said Wednesday.
Carl Jejune Chester, 18, and Edward Q. Johnson, 18, both of 107 Sycamore St., Amite, were caught after deputies surrounded them Tuesday lying behind a small hill in woods off Cane Break Drive in the Amite area, deputies said in a statement.
The men had fled to the woods from a residence at 13458 Cane Break Drive after a shootout with the homeowner.
He had tried to detain the men in his back yard while he called 911, deputies said.
Chester and Johnson told deputies they approached several houses with the intention of burglarizing them and even ran from one home with security cameras, deputies said.
A woman living at the home on Cane Break Drive told deputies one of men rang her door bell several times and, when she asked what he wanted, he said he was looking for “Thomas.”
She told him no one by that name lived at that address and he needed to leave. The man walked away, but her husband arrived later and confronted him and a second man, eventually leading to the shootout. No one was injured.
Johnson and Chester have been booked with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated burglary, deputies said.
Deputies said they believe Johnson was involved with daytime burglaries on the parish’s north end and more charges could be pending.
