An East Baton Rouge Parish grand jury indicted a 21-year-old Slaughter man Wednesday in the October shooting death of a Zachary man outside a liquor store.

The grand jury charged Elliot Howard with second-degree murder in the slaying of 23-year-old Gerald Parker Sr.

The shooting occurred Oct. 19 outside the T&W Mini Market, 24110 Reames Road, near Zachary.

Parker, who died Oct. 21, was shot once in the chest and once in the leg during an argument, prosecutor Jeff Traylor said.

Sheriff’s officials said Howard also allegedly shot at another man but did not hit him.

Traylor said it is still not known why Howard and Parker, who had known each other for an extended period of time, were arguing.

Under Louisiana law, a second-degree murder conviction carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison.

Traylor said Howard is represented by lawyer Jerry D’A-quila, of New Roads. D’Aquila was out of town Wednesday and unavailable for comment.

Howard, who was arrested Oct. 21, remains in Parish Prison.

Howard’s case has been assigned to state District Judge Tony Marabella.
