ABBEVILLE — The Vermilion Parish Police Jury voted Monday to re-elect Gerald Butaud and Ronald Darby as its president and vice president, respectively, for a second consecutive year.

Chris Theriot was also re-elected as the parish administrator, who also serves as secretary-treasurer.

Butaud thanked the jury for their faith in his leadership during brief comments following the elections.

“2008 was more successful than I ever could have imagined,” he said. “I thank the jurors for their support and I look forward to serving for another year as we face the challenges ahead of us.”

In other action, the jury unanimously voted to allow Parish Engineer Eugene Sellers to begin surveying the areas around four parish bridges in anticipation of President-elect Barack Obama’s proposed stimulus package. Sellers said he received a call from the state Department of Transportation and Development asking him to have the jury prepare projects in anticipation of the federal stimulus passing later this month.

Sellers said the jury has long been looking to replace old bridges, and this was a great opportunity to have up to four spans replaced, including those on Conrad, Dalton, Elliot and Lloyd roads. He explained the bridge projects were being delayed by rights-of-way issues, but engineering could be reworked to use existing roads.

Juror Wayne Touchet then moved to have the work done with a second by Darby, who was informed by Sellers any infrastructure project could possibly qualify for funding.

“The stimulus package should be completed by Jan. 20, and we should be able to have the surveying done by then,” he said. “We need jury permission to go to the state and redesign the bridges. We have 22 bridges across the parish that have never been funded by any source, and we can get these ready to go if we begin surveying now.”
