A 22-year-old Gonzales man died Saturday morning in a crash in LaSalle Parish, Louisiana State Police said in a news release.

Around 10:46 a.m., Matthew S. Lowe, of Gonzales, was driving eastbound on La. 28 near the Diversion Canal, State Police spokesman Scott Moreau said.

Lowe’s 2003 Chevrolet pickup crossed the center line and struck the rear of an oncoming 2005 Mack 18-wheeler traveling westbound.

The pickup then spun into the path of a 1990 Mack 18-wheeler traveling west. The second 18-wheeler crashed into the driver’s side of Lowe’s truck, Moreau said.

A tire from Lowe’s vehicle flew off and struck an abandoned 2000 Ford pickup on the side of the roadway, Moreau said.

Moreau said Lowe died at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

Two boys, ages 13 and 10, were in the vehicle with Lowe, Moreau said. They both suffered serious injuries and were transported to Rapides General Hospital, Moreau said.

The driver of the 2005 Mack, Gerald Prudhomme, 60, of Eunice, was not injured, Moreau said. Patrick R. Fontenot, 54, also of Eunice, driver of the other 18-wheeler, suffered minor injuries, Moreau said.

State Police do not know what caused Lowe to cross over into the oncoming lane, Moreau said.

The accident is still under investigation, he said.
