Project on I-10 to begin
Motorists will start to see orange barrels, signs and surveyors on Interstate 10 Monday as widening begins between the Interstate 10/12 split and Siegen Lane, a DOTD official said.
“That’s when people will see the signs of preparing for the work,” said Brendan Rush, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation and Development.
Rush said the clock on the contract between the state and contractor Austin Road and Bridge began Friday, but official work won’t start until Monday.
The project was awarded in August to Austin Road and Bridge, a Texas firm. A groundbreaking for the road widening will be held either in the first or second full week of January, he said.
The project contract is for $86.2 million and could take three years to complete, Rush said.
Work crews will widen the stretch of I-10 from two to three lanes in each direction, Rush said.
Monday’s I-10 work is one of two significant interstate projects to start soon in the Baton Rouge area. State officials signed a $100 million contract last month to widen part of Interstate 12.
Work on that widening should begin in February, DOTD officials said. The project is scheduled to be finished by Thanksgiving 2011, the officials said.
The project will widen eastbound I-12 to three lanes from O’Neal Lane to just east of Pete’s Highway in Denham Springs.
Westbound I-12 will be widened to three lanes from just west of 4-H Club Road to the west side of the O’Neal Lane Overpass.
