Pickup stolen, crashed; police seek two men
MONTPELIER — Authorities are looking for two men who crashed a stolen pickup truck on La. 43 after gassing up Thursday afternoon with a stolen credit card across the street from the St. Helena Parish Sheriff’s Office in Greensburg, police said.
The truck, which had musical equipment inside, was stolen before 4 a.m. Thursday at an apartment just outside Ponchatoula, Montpelier Police Chief Gerald O’Malley said Friday.
The 2003 Chevrolet pickup crashed and flipped into a gully around 3:45 p.m. in a dangerous curve along La. 43 in Montpelier. The two men caught a ride to La. 16, O’Malley said.
From the intersection of La. 16 and La. 43, the men are believed to have caught another ride toward Tangipahoa Parish, possibly to a hospital, O’Malley said.
One of the men, described as a tall, light-skinned black man, had a bleeding gash on his head, O’Malley said.
The other man is described as a short, stocky, muscular black man with stitches in his lip, O’Malley said.
The men had pumped $38.72 in gas from the St. Helena Stop and Go on La. 10 and tried to use the credit card, which belonged to the owner of the truck.
The card did not work, and they fled, O’Malley said.
He said the musical equipment, including drums, was missing from the crashed truck.
