GRAMERCY — A robber and his victim are dead after exchanging gunfire during an attempted holdup Thursday, authorities said.

The robbery victim, Danny Russell of Paulina, was in the parking lot of Stump’s Shell at 220 East Airline Highway in Gramercy when Herbert E. Johnson of Garyville approached him with a gun, demanding money, said St. James Parish Sheriff Wiley Martin.

Russell got his own weapon from inside his car, and the two men exchanged gunfire, Martin said.

Johnson fled into a nearby field, where he died, and Russell ran into the store, collapsed and died later at an area hospital, Martin said.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are looking for a possible accomplice, he said.
