Shooting at nightclub injures one
Baton Rouge police officers investigating a possible burglary of Splash Nightclub this morning came under fire and shot a 29-year old club employee who was found inside the business.
At about 4:40 a.m. officers responded to a burglar alarm at the business, 2138 Highland Road, and found an unsecured door that appeared to have been pried open, along with other possible indicators of a break-in, said Sgt. Don Kelly, a police spokesman.
The officers entered the building, and while searching it for suspects, came across a man on a couch on the second floor, Kelly said.
The officers identified themselves and gave the man commands, but the man responded by shooting at the officers, Kelly said.
Two of the officers returned fire, striking the man in the arm, leg and shoulder, Kelly said. None of the officers were hit, he said.
The man, David Wayne Robinson, is an employee of the club who was apparently sleeping inside the business, Kelly said. Robinson was taken to the Baton Rouge General Mid-City for treatment and is expected to survive, Kelly said.
The officers who fired their weapons and an officer who was in the room but who did not fire his weapon are being placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation, Kelly said.
Per Police Department policy the officers’ names will not be released for 24 hours, but they are all uniformed patrol officers assigned to the department’s 2nd District, Kelly said.
