Museum’s open house is Sunday
The West Baton Rouge Parish Museum will host its annual Holiday Open House from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. Sunday.
For the event, the museum’s grounds will be transformed to depict the bustling activities characteristic of how Christmas was celebrated long ago on sugar cane plantations at the end of grinding season.
Outdoors, Sno-Mobile of Louisiana will be on hand to blanket the grounds with a patch of real snow for an afternoon of supervised snow activities.
Indoors, museum staff will serve gingerbread slices and warm cups of mulled cider while guests are invited to tour the museum’s exhibits.
In an area of the museum known as the Big House, or the 1830 Creole Aillet House, performances depicting Victorian-era holiday customs will be staged.
The museum is at 845 N. Jefferson Ave. in Port Allen. For information, call Laurie Roché at (225) 336-2422, Ext. 16.
The Tau Kappa Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. has partnered with the Iberville Parish Museum to unveil a new exhibit entitled “100 and Fabulous!”
The exhibit, which goes on view between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday, chronicles the history of the organization as the nation’s oldest African American sorority.
The sorority started 100 years ago in a Howard University dormitory room in Washington, D.C., and continues today with a chapter in Plaquemine.
Iberville Parish Museum curator Beth Cardinal said she couldn’t be more pleased to join with the sorority to display the exhibit. She said the organization “has had a profound impact internationally, nationally and locally.”
