Tangipahoa Parish sheriff’s detectives are investigating the shooting of at least 28 head of cattle at a Kentwood farm during the last nine months, investigators said Monday.
The cattle are being shot with a high-powered rifle, detective Keith Womack said.
The property where the shootings have occurred is on La. 1058 just behind Chesbrough Elementary School, but Womack said he doubts there is a danger to the schoolchildren because the shootings apparently are occurring at night.
It’s usually taking the cattle several days to die because they are being “gut shot,” Womack said.
That has made the investigation more difficult because it’s difficult to pinpoint either the time or place where the shootings have occurred, said Dawn Panepinto, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office.
She said the owner, whom she declined to identify, has offered a $10,000 reward to anyone providing information that would lead to the arrest of the person doing the shooting.
“The owner is very frustrated,” she said.
He doesn’t live at the site of the pasture where the cattle are being killed, Panepinto added.
No shooting of cattle has been reported at any other location in the parish, Panepinto said.
She said there doesn’t appear to be anything ritualistic about the cattle slayings.
The latest cow that was killed was carrying a calf, which also died, Womack said.
He estimated the value of the Black Angus cattle at $2,000 to $3,000 each. The motive for the shootings remains unclear, though it appears that it’s being done by someone who is upset with the owner of the cattle.
The caliber of the rifle isn’t known because the bullets have all passed through the bodies of the cattle, he said.
