At least two people died in separate incidents on Baton Rouge area roadways Sunday,  authorities said.

In Livingston Parish, an 84-year-old Tennessee man was killed Sunday morning when a train hit his van, Livingston Police Chief Randy Dufrene  said.

Sidney Stafford drove his van into the path of an oncoming train at a crossing on East Railroad Avenue around 10 a.m., Dufrene said.

Upon impact, the van flipped into the ditch beside the railroad  tracks, Dufrene said.

Paramedics took Stafford to Oschner Medical Center in Baton Rouge, where he died from multiple head injuries, Dufrene said.

Dufrene said this is the second fatality he has worked at that crossing in 12 years.

Stafford was from Tennessee but often came to Livingston to visit friends, Dufrene said.

In East Baton Rouge Parish, a man died in a car crash early Sunday, State Police Trooper Russell Graham said in a news release.

The accident happened about 2:15 a.m. on O’Neal Lane north of Interstate 12. Graham said the driver lost control of his 2002 Nissan Quest as he entered a left-hand curve. The vehicle went off the road and hit a tree.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, Graham said. The driver was not wearing a seatbelt, he said.

Alcohol is suspected as a factor in the crash and blood was taken from the victim for analysis, Graham said.

Graham did not have the victim’s name at press time.
