The Department of Insurance topped its annual Thanksgiving food drive efforts this year by collecting more than 4,317 pounds of food, Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon announced.
The food was donated to the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank.
“It’s just a good way of saying thanks for those of us who are blessed with a bountiful feast on this holiday,” Donelon said last week in announcing the drive’s results.
Donelon said the department’s 280 employees’ motivation during the three-week drive this year was heightened by competition for incentives such as “dress down week” and a select parking spot.
La. representatives to meet over health
Members of the Louisiana House travel to Baton Rouge on Monday for a special health-care briefing.
House Speaker Jim Tucker scheduled the day-long meeting so colleagues could be brought up to date on an array of issues which they will be tackling in the coming months.
“It’s a big ball of wax. I thought it was important at this stage of the game to engage the whole House,” said Tucker.
The primary issue up for discussion will be Gov. Bobby Jindal’s health care restructuring initiative.
The House briefing will include presentations by state health chief Alan Levine and officials of the LSU Health Sciences Center, the Louisiana Hospital Association and the Louisiana State Medical Society.
The briefing begins at 10 a.m. in the House chamber.

In Iowa, Jindal focused on conservative, religious groups.
