NEW ORLEANS — The Southern University Board of Supervisors elected Port Allen lawyer Tony Clayton as its new chairman Friday after the current board leader decided not to seek re-election.

Chairman Myron Lawson, of Alexandria, cited job and family constraints while saying Clayton would do a great job when he takes over in January.

Lawson narrowly beat out Clayton for the chairman’s position a year ago.

“This young man (Clayton) has the time and talent and ability to move this board forward,” Lawson said.

“This means a lot to me,” said Clayton, who often is the board’s most vocal member. “I’m deeply honored.”

After Lawson announced he would not seek re-election, there was no opposition to Clayton.

Board Vice Chairwoman Lea Montgomery, of New Orleans, will remain in the same position next year when no one opposed her re-election.

Lawson, who owns a State Farm agency, is the new Alexandria City Council president.

Clayton is a West Baton Rouge Parish prosecutor who won a second-degree murder conviction in the prominent trial against serial killer Derrick Todd Lee, of St. Francisville.

Clayton has recently been mentioned as a possible contender to become the next U.S. attorney for the Baton Rouge-based Middle District of Louisiana.

Lawson’s six-year term on the board ends after December but he would remain on the board until reappointed or replaced by Gov.
Bobby Jindal. He said that was not a factor in his decision because he hopes to be reappointed. Chairmen typically serve for two years.

After first being appointed by former Gov. Mike Foster, Clayton was reappointed to the board last year by then-Gov. Kathleen Blanco.

Board member Richard Caiton, of New Orleans, said Clayton is ready to take over.
