CONVENT — Members of the public can share their feelings about a proposed pig iron facility’s environmental effects tonight.

The state Department of Environmental Quality has scheduled a 6 p.m. public hearing at the St. James Parish Courthouse, Courtroom A, 5800 La. 44, in Convent.

DEQ will use the public input in determining whether to issue permits needed to allow Nucor to build a new facility on a 4,000-acre site south of La. 3125 and east of La. 70 in Convent along the Mississippi River

Residents and those in attendance will have the opportunity to sign up to speak for or against the proposed facility.

Nucor announced in mid-May that the company had applied for a permit to build a state-of-the-art iron-making facility in St. James Parish. The facility would be called “Nucor Steel Louisiana.”

Nucor has evaluated multiple domestic and international sites and has narrowed locations to the St. James location and another in Brazil.

Nucor could announce its decision next month, state officials have said.

Nucor Chief Executive Officer Dan DiMicco said in August that the Charlotte, N.C.-based company is satisfied with the labor and business outlook in Louisiana and Gov. Bobby Jindal’s offer of financial and worker training assistance.
