One dead in overnight fire on 78th Avenue
One person has died and one has been injured in overnight fire on 78th Avenue in Baton Rouge, according to Baton Rouge Fire Department spokesman Barry Mounce. Four people lived in the home.
The fire happened at 3:25 a.m. at 2657 78th Ave., and firefighters had it under control at 4:12 a.m.
The exact cause of the fire is unknown but it has been determined the fire started in the living room of the house, according to the Baton Rouge Fire Department.
When firefighters arrived, the flames were coming out of the windows and through the roof of the structure.
Three of the occupants escaped but the fourth, an adult female, was in the rear bedroom of the house. Rescue attempts were hampered by burglar bars on the doors and windows of the house. She was unable to escape via the door the others used because the fire had blocked her path and died in the fire.
It is unknown if firefighters could have rescued her without any delays caused by the burglar bars.
No word on cause of fire or the name of the victim.
One other occupant of the house suffered burns and was taken to the Baton Rouge General Mid-City hospital. EMS personnel said she was conscious and alert when transported to the hospital.
