Midland street remains in care of Acadia Parish
CROWLEY — The Acadia Parish Police Jury voted 4-3 Wednesday night against abandoning a disputed street in the Midland community.
Before voting, jurors discussed the issue at length and failed to second a motion by Juror Al Stevenson to table the abandonment of Hunington Street.
Jury attorney Doug Wimberly said the parish took the correct procedural steps prior to the vote. “You’ve had a public hearing, and you’ve heard from both sides,” Wimberly said.
Juror Kermit Richard said the jury has already spent at least $35,000 in litigation fees over the question of abandonment.
“The issue after all of that is still not resolved. The sole purpose of bringing up this abandonment is to stop wasting money. It’s an issue that won’t be resolved as long as (the parish) is involved in it,” Richard said.
Stevenson said he favored tabling the abandonment because the matter is certain to be decided in the courts.
President A.J. Credeur said Hunington Street shouldn’t be considered a road.
“It’s a right of way. We need to get rid of it,” he said.
Voting for the abandonment were A.J. Broussard, John Quebodeaux, and Richard.
Voting against were Cade Benoit, Felton Moreau, Thomas Sonnier and Stevenson.
In other matters, the Jury voted unanimously to sign cooperative agreements of $55,000 for LSU at Eunice and the Acadia Council on Aging for public facility improvements; $15,000 for the Mire, Egan and Mermenteau fire departments; and $46,875 for expenses at the parish Office of Homeland Security.
The jury also unanimously approved Finance Committee recommendations to authorize Credeur to sign documents for two property sales in the Crowley-Rayne Industrial Park.
