Former Republican Gov. Dave Treen on Monday endorsed Democrat Mary Landrieu’s bid for a third term in the U.S. Senate.

Treen said the state benefits from having one senator from each political party.

“As a former congressman and governor, I understand the importance of bipartisanship,” Treen said in a prepared statement issued by Landrieu’s campaign.

“Sen. Landrieu has always worked across the aisle to get the job done for Louisiana,” he said.

“She is respected by Republicans and Democrats in the Senate and she is able to deliver for our communities when we need it most,” Treen said.

Landrieu faces Republican State Treasurer John Kennedy in the Nov. 4 election. The state’s other U.S. senator is Republican David Vitter.

Kennedy has called Landrieu the most-liberal senator in state history.

Landrieu said she has been endorsed by 27 current Republican elected officials, including four from St. Tammany Parish, where Kennedy lives.

Asked about Treen’s endorsement Lenny Alcivar, Kennedy’s campaign spokesman said “We wish the former governor well.”
