Board OKs hiring, gets bond issue brochure
VILLE PLATTE — There was discussion and disagreement over the appointment of Brandi Buller as a special education secretary on Wednesday during a meeting of the Evangeline Parish School Board.
Eighteen people had applied for the position and Buller was one of the top three finishers listed on the agenda with a recommendation by the interviewing committee.
Board members Wanda Skinner and Georgianna Wilson, however, had reservations about the way the board had advertised the position.
Superintendent Toni Hamlin said the position, as well as all clerical positions, advertise that the qualifications include a minimum of a high school diploma and computer skills.
Skinner said one of the questions asked by the committee dealt with experience in billing because the position’s responsibilities include Medicaid billing. She said she felt the need for billing experience should have been placed in the advertisement.
After the discussion, three people were nominated for the position including two of the top three. The recommended applicant — Buller — was appointed.
In other business, Hamlin handed out new brochures that will be distributed to the public giving information about the board’s bond issue on Nov. 4 to fund construction of a new Ville Platte High School.
Ward 1 voters on that date will decide the fate of the $17.7 million proposition to build a new Ville Platte High School as well as improvements to Chataignier Elementary.
The bonds will be repaid over a 30-year period through a 15.5 mill property tax. Should the bond issue pass, the School Board will ask the state for permission next year to call a 1-cent sales tax election to reduce the burden on property owners.
In other business, the board recognized the following teachers as Parish Teachers of the Year:
