  • Correction: A police brief that ran in Wednesday’s edition of The Advocate reported the wrong age of shooting victim Channin Sanders, who was killed Oct. 12 in an accidental shooting.
Sanders, 8157 Starwood Court, was 16, not 17 when he died. The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office gave The Advocate the incorrect age. The Advocate regrets the error.

DWI suspect booked into Parish Prison
Authorities arrested at least one people suspected of driving while intoxicated in East Baton Rouge Parish and booked him into Parish Prison between 3 p.m. Monday and 3 p.m. Tuesday, booking records show.

Robert Luke Perry, 24, 2225 College Drive, Apt. 25, was booked with first-offense DWI and an equipment violation.

Teen showing gun accidentally killed
Channin Sanders, 17, was shot and killed Sunday at his Starwood Court home while he was showing two of his friends a shotgun, an East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman said.

The incident occurred at 10:58 p.m. in Sanders’ bedroom at 8157 Starwood Court, Casey Rayborn Hicks said. Sanders and two of his 17-year-old friends were in the bedroom when Sanders pulled a loaded shotgun out of his closet.

When the teenagers were about the leave, one of Sanders’ friends picked up the gun and handed it to Sanders to put back in the closet, Hicks said.

Sanders grabbed the gun by its barrel and pulled it toward his chest, she said. As Sanders pulled the gun, his friend unintentionally pulled the trigger, Hicks said.

The friend immediately called 911, Hicks said. However, Sanders was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators deemed the shooting accidental and turned over their findings to the District Attorney’s Office, Hicks said.

Murder try suspect arrested in drug case
Less than two months after bonding out of Parish Prison on an attempted murder charge, Dearius Duheart was arrested again Sunday, accused of possession with intent to distribute drugs.

Duheart, 19, posted a $280,000 bail on the attempted murder charge and was released on Aug. 23.

Duheart and his brother Denako were initially booked into Parish Prison on a count of first-degree murder late last year in connection with the Oct. 2007 death of Jason Fourmy. Their charges were reduced to attempted second-degree murder in April because two witnesses to Fourmy’s murder were slain, a prosecutor has said.

On Oct. 12, Dearius Duheart was arrested after a police officer saw him blocking traffic in a white Mazda 6 around 3:30 p.m. in the 2700 block of Lobelia Avenue, an arrest affidavit says.

When the officer approached Duheart, he ran inside a house, the affidavit says. When the officer caught up with Duheart inside the house, he said he ran because he is afraid of the police, the affidavit says.
