A 5-year-old girl was killed Saturday night after a car she was passenger in ran off the road and overturned on Interstate 12 at O’Neal Lane, according to a police news release.

Kaylen Janae Roy, of Mandeville, who was ejected, died of her injuries at Oschner Medical Center, the news release said.

The incident occurred just after 10:30 p.m., police said.

Cody Wade Roy, 27, 235 Rosewood St., Mandeville, was driving a 2001 Ford Taurus and was also ejected from the car after it overturned, police said.

Police Cpl. L’Jean McKneely Jr. said Sunday that it appeared the driver was swerving, and he may have fallen asleep.

Roy was listed in critical condition Sunday at Oschner Medical Center.

The driver of the car and the girl have the same address, but McKneely said he did not know their relationship.

The crash is under investigation by the Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit.

When asked if the man and the girl were using seat belts and the proper restraints, McKneely said that was still under investigation.

BR man, 20, accused in break-in, shooting
Police arrested a 20-year-old man Saturday accused of shooting at a victim after breaking into the victim’s car and taking several items.

Michael Jerome Nelson, 5544 Sumrall St., allegedly broke into the car of a man who was visiting a friend in the 5400 block of Oaklan Drive, a warrant says.

After the break-in, the owner of the car confronted Nelson, an argument ensued and Nelson left but returned with a gun and allegedly fired it, the warrant says.

The shots missed the victim, but hit his car, the warrant said.

Nelson was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on a count of attempted second-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon, booking documents show.
