Two men accused in September shooting

Baton Rouge Police on Friday arrested two men in connection with a September shooting that left one man injured, according to an arrest warrant.

One day after an argument, Reginald C. McManus, 18, and Reginald W. Jackson, 41, returned to the 400 block of North Eugene Street and began arguing with two men again, an arrest warrant says.

The argument began to escalate, and Jackson grabbed a handgun and struck one of the men in the back of the head, the warrant says. The gun fell to the ground during a struggle, and was picked up by McManus, who fired at the two victims, striking one in the arm.

McManus, of 3229 Canonicus St., was booked into Parish Prison on a count of attempted first-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon, booking documents show. Jackson, of 1529 Fairchild St., was booked on a count of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery.

Cooking fire causes damage to BR home
An cooking fire damaged a home and contributed to a pet dog’s death late Friday evening, firefighters reported.

Residents of 13534 Shortridge Ave., evacuated safely, according to a St. George Fire Protection District news release. The fire was reported at 11:25 p.m. and under control about 20 minutes later, the release said.

The kitchen and adjacent family room received heavy fire and heat damage. Smoke damage occurred throughout the house, the release said.

Damage estimates were not available. An American Red Cross representative assisted the family.

Arson destroys vacant house
The Baton Rouge Fire Department is investigating why a vacant house was deliberately set afire Friday night.

The fire destroyed the 2121 E. Mason house, according to a news release.

It was reported at 8:30 p.m., and brought under control at 9:12 p.m., the release said. Investigators were told that the structure was vacant. The damage estimate was $35,000, the release said.

Eight accused of driving drunk
Authorities arrested at least eight people suspected of driving while intoxicated in East Baton Rouge Parish and booked them into Parish Prison between 3 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday, booking records show.

Those booked and the counts against them:
  • Reginald D. Hatch, 42, 19138 Vignes Road, first-offense DWI, failure to maintain control and reckless operation.
  • Jeffrey Paul Napolitano, 21, 601 Glenwood Drive, Metairie, first-offense DWI, misdemeanor theft, reckless operation and expired driver’s license.
  • Seth Douglas Pellerin, 19, 114 Becky Drive, Patterson, first-offense DWI, reckless operation and failure to stop or yield.
  • Maurice Andrew Saale, 26, 15720 Ferrell Ave., first-offense DWI, obstruction of a public highway and expired motor vehicle inspection.
  • Parker Webb Gibbs, 19, 1520 Knollwood St., first-offense DWI and failure to maintain control.
  • Roderick Poindexter, 23, 8312 Colverton St., first-offense DWI, improper lane usage and open container violation.
  • William David Blanchard, 43, 57905 Desoby St., Plaquemine, first-offense DWI, turns not allowed, reckless operation and drinking in a motor vehicle.
  • Tyrone Smith, 48, 1622 West Terry St., Gonzales, second-offense DWI and obstruction of a public passage.
