A man was shot Thursday at a Hollywood Street pawn shop after he tried to sell a stolen miter saw, police said.

Robert Lee Glasper, 48, 4274 Clayton St., walked into Penny Pincher Pawn Shop, 5025 Hollywood St., at 9:30 a.m. and told an employee he wanted to sell a miter saw, said Sgt. Don Kelly, a Police Department spokesman.

The employee recognized the saw because he had previously sold it to a friend and because his friend’s name was written on the saw, Kelly said.

Before agreeing to buy the saw, the employee called his friend, Elijah James Brown, 37, 12308 Cardigan Ave., and asked if he knew where the tool was because someone was trying to sell it to him, Kelly said.

Brown told the employee the saw was in his shed, but when he checked, he found the saw missing, Kelly said.

As a result, Brown and his brother went to the pawn shop and confronted Glasper, he said.

During the confrontation, Brown pulled a gun on Glasper and shot him in his lower abdomen, Kelly said.

Glasper was taken to LSU Earl K. Long Medical Center, where he underwent surgery, he said.

Brown stayed at the pawn shop until police arrived, Kelly said.

He was arrested and booked into Parish Prison on one count each of attempted second-degree murder and illegal use of a dangerous weapon.

Because Brown’s home is outside the city limits of Baton Rouge, the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating the possible burglary of his shed, Kelly said.

Casey Rayborn Hicks, a Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman, confirmed Thursday that deputies are investigating the possible burglary.

Terry James, a friend of Brown’s who was at the pawn shop Thursday, said people are getting tired of having their houses broken into and more people are going to get shot if it doesn’t stop.
