AMITE —  Councilman Charles “Boo” Christmas  announced Tuesday that he was resigning  from his District 5 seat immediately and he asked that Rose Summerall be named his successor.

Summerall, who was elected Saturday to represent District 5, would have been sworn in for the seat on the council that Christmas now occupies in January. The council unanimously agreed to seat Summerall on the council to serve the remainder of Christmas’ term of office.

Christmas, who challenged Mayor Reggie Goldsby in Saturday’s election, said he resigned because of an agreement he and Goldsby had made before the election. Goldsby was re-elected Saturday.

“During the race for mayor, Goldsby and I agreed that if he won, I would resign my (council) seat and if I won, he would resign his position (as mayor). Now he (Goldsby) can do what he wants with the budget,” Christmas said in an interview.

Goldsby and Christmas have been at loggerheads over approval of the town’s budget, which was originally scheduled for a vote before the current fiscal year started on July 1. After several regular and two special meetings, a budget for the town of Amite still has not been approved.

Christmas said he planned to mail his official resignation to the Louisiana secretary of state Wednesday.

At the same meeting, the council agreed unanimously to approve removal of an old, unused water tower after learning from civil engineer Kylie Bates that a firm has been found to demolish the raised tank for $17,500.

He said the contractor was ready to start removing the tower within two weeks.

In an unrelated matter,  Goldsby announced that official “trick or treating” for Halloween would be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30.

Amite High School is scheduled to play a football game on the actual Halloween date, Friday, Oct. 31, and that monitoring the game and the Halloween festivities would put too much strain on the town’s Police Department, Goldsby said.
