Defeated candidates endorse Babin for DA
GONZALES — Two defeated candidates in the race for the 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office on Monday endorsed first-place finisher Ricky Babin.
Babin faces former state Sen. Louis Lambert in the Nov. 4 runoff for the seat held by District Attorney Tony Falterman, who decided not to seek re-election and endorsed Babin, his first assistant district attorney.
The 23rd Judicial District covers the parishes of Ascension, Assumption and St. James.
Former District Judge Pegram Mire, who finished third in the primary, said he will do “anything and everything” to help Babin win the runoff election.
“If they were equally qualified, I’d stay out of it, but it’s not even close,” Mire said. “I really believe that Ricky Babin will mature into a great public servant.”
Assistant District Attorney Chuck Long, who finished fourth in the race, said, “I ran a campaign based on experience and for me to endorse anybody other than Ricky would be hypocritical. Lambert’s a nice guy, but I don’t believe he has the experience to protect our community from criminals.
“I encourage everybody who voted for me to vote for Ricky,” Long said.
“It means a lot to me to have their endorsement,” Babin said. “I value their endorsement and their counsel. Both said their endorsement was out of concern for the people and the district.”
In Saturday’s primary election, Babin led all candidates with 11,540 votes, or 34.77 percent, according to complete but unofficial returns.
Lambert received 9,370 votes, or 28.27 percent.
Mire received 6,800 votes, or 20.49 percent, and Long got 5,436 votes, or 16.50 percent.
Lambert said the endorsements don’t change his plans to run. “I don’t think it’s going to have a great bearing on the race. I’ll take my case directly to the people as I’ve always done.
“Mr. Babin is basically the incumbent and any time the incumbent gets only one-third of the vote, I think people are interested in having a choice, and I’m giving them that choice.”
