Disaster food stamps benefit 1.5 million
The state Department of Social Services announced Monday that more than 600,000 households received about $208 million in Disaster Food Stamp Program benefits after hurricanes Gustav and Ike in early September.
During the more than three-week period that ended last week, 605,948 households — 604,235 affected by Gustav and 1,713 affected by Ike — were approved for disaster benefits, a news release from the department states.
The households represented more than 1.5 million people. Benefits were denied to 38,475 applicants.
East Baton Rouge Parish received the second largest amount of benefits in the program designated for victims of Hurricane Gustav.
About 68,000 households were given more than $22 million in benefits.
Louisiana has also processed 3,647 Texas households and issued $1.2 million in disaster food stamp benefits to those families who evacuated to Louisiana due to Hurricane Ike.
