Police make arrests in robberies
LAFAYETTE — Police investigated two separate and apparently unrelated robberies over the weekend at a hotel on Evangeline Thruway.
According to Lafayette police, the first robbery occurred about 10:30 p.m. Friday at the Royal Inn, located in the 1800 block of Northwest Evangeline Thruway.
According to police, the 21-year-old victim from Denham Springs walked into his hotel room and found an unknown man inside. Two other robbers approached the victim from behind, struck him in the head and held him at gunpoint, police said.
The robbers stole an undisclosed amount of money from the man’s pockets and ran away from the hotel, police said.
They said the victim managed to stop one man and held him until police arrived.
Police arrested Andre N. Esters, 25, of Lake Charles on a charge of armed robbery.
The second robbery occurred early Sunday morning when two brothers from Ocala, Fla.. who were staying at the hotel, answered the knock of a young male who asked to use the phone.
When one of the victims allowed him inside, three others entered the room and robbed the brothers at gunpoint, police said.
Two of the robbers then forced one of the brothers at gunpoint to travel with them to a bank and withdraw money, police said, while the other two remained at the room with the other victim.
About 3:45 a.m., an officer saw a car being driven recklessly, as a result of an apparent struggle inside, near the intersection of Castille Road and Northwest Frontage, police said.
The officer stopped the vehicle. One robber fled on foot.
The victim then told police that he had stabbed the other robber during a fight in the car. Police said a 16-year-old boy in the car was taken to a local hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, police said.
Officers then responded to the hotel room and arrested Steven Broussard, 18, of Lafayette and Darius Jenkins, 21, of Youngsville, on charges of aggravated kidnapping and armed robbery, police said.
Police arrested James W. Woods, 18, of Lafayette, early Monday morning on the same charges.
