ABBEVILLE — The Vermilion Parish Police Jury unanimously elected to accept the new parish tax assessment evaluations for the 2008 tax year as submitted by Assessor Michael Langlinais.

On hand to make a presentation to the jury at a regular meeting Monday was Assessor-elect Kathy Broussard.

She said the parish found itself in good shape for the 2008 tax year with real property values climbing from $148.9 million to $173 million. Personal properties also increased from $138.2 million in 2007 to $155.4 million.

“2008 was a very good year for property values,” Broussard said. “There was a $40 million increase in assessed values, with $17 million of the increase due to movable properties such as oil and gas, aircraft and inventories. This will bring an additional $3 million in revenues to the parish from all districts.”

While all went well with the assessments, she said, some areas may need to be reassessed again due to repeated flooding from recent hurricanes beginning with Rita.

“Only time will tell, but we may need to reassess flooded properties next year or the year after,” Broussard said. “If need be, we can reassess more than once in the mandated 4-year period.”

But overall, she said, the efforts of her office have been fruitful, and she was proud to add there were no objections to the new assessments.

“This year has been wonderful as it pertains to property values,” Broussard said. “We will continue to watch the market in the future because that is our job.”
