LSU awarded pay raises Thursday to baseball coach Paul Mainieri and track and field coach Dennis Shaver.

After leading LSU back to the College World Series this year, Mainieri is getting a $75,000 raise up to $525,000 annually. It is his second year in Baton Rouge.

The deal — approved by the LSU Board of Supervisors on Thursday — also includes increases in his postseason incentives and up to $150,000 more from the Tiger Athletic Foundation to go toward the contract buyout of his previous job at the University of Nore Dame.

Shaver’s new contract raises his annual pay package to $190,000, which is a $15,000 increase.

Shaver coached the women’s track team to the outdoor national championship this year and the men’s team finished in second place.

LSU Athletic Director Joe Alleva said the pay increases are warranted because of the coaches’ “tremendous successes and market values.”

“Based on their success and records, I feel it’s really appropriate,” Alleva said.

“I’m extremely pleased,” Mainieri said. “Joe Alleva decided he wanted to do that for me and the powers that be were pleased with how the team performed.”

The pay raise was not part of Mainieri’s original contract.

“It wasn’t anything I demanded or anything like that,” Mainieri said of the increase.

The extra money toward his $450,000 Notre Dame buyout was a nice touch as well, he said.

“I took a pretty big risk to come to LSU,” he said, referring to the large amount of money he owed Notre Dame as a result.

As for the upcoming baseball season, “Hopefully this will be the year” LSU wins another national championship, he said.
