PRAIRIEVILLE — Improvements to an Interstate 10 interchange in northern Ascension Parish are expected to be complete in March 2009, officials said Thursday.

Announcing that a $2.44 million contract for the work has been awarded, state Rep. Eddie Lambert, R-Prairieville, said the project should ease a lot of congestion in the area, making the highways safer, and expressed his frustration that it has taken so long.

“This project is long overdue,” Lambert said. “We began working on the project in October of 2004.”

Engineers drafting the plans failed to meet state Department of Transportation and Development specifications, postponing the work,  Lambert said.

“Had it not been for the delay, this project would have been complete by now,” he said.

State Sen. Jody Amedee, D-Gonzales, and Ascension Parish President Tommy Martinez also expressed relief that the project is finally moving into construction.

Martinez praised the cooperation between the state and the parish to push the project forward.

The project will add a left-turn lane on La. 621 for westbound motorists, allowing direct access to Interstate 10 westbound. Also, a right-turn lane will be added on La. 73 for northbound travelers wanting to head east on La. 621.

Other improvements in the project include:
  • Widening I-10 westbound onramp to provide two lanes from La. 73.
  • Widening I-10 eastbound exit ramp to allow two lanes to turn north on La. 73 and one lane to turn right going south.
  • Install new traffic signals along La. 73.
RCS Contractors Inc. of Port Allen won the bid.
