Ex-LSU player honored for donation

Former LSU football player Jerry Dumas left school just short of graduation because he needed to provide financially for his family after his athletics eligibility expired.
Now the Houston businessman is giving back $2 million — mostly in sports athlete scholarships and an endowed political science chair — to his alma mater partly so the next generation of student-athletes does not have to leave school early.
“I want to see all student-athletes, men and women, graduate,” said Dumas, after he was honored Monday at LSU for his private gift.
Dumas went on to officially graduate from LSU more than 25 years after leaving school in 1957.
He is now chairman, president and CEO of Flotek Industries, which manufactures chemicals and drilling products used in the oil and gas industry.
Dumas, along with his wife, Nancy, made the LSU donation official Monday. He credited her for helping put the deal together.
The gift is the largest for LSU’s College of Arts and Sciences since the inception of the Forever LSU campaign.

The Forever LSU campaign to raise $750 million by the end of 2010 is now at $562 million, according to LSU. But that includes nearly $32 million in state matching funds for some of the private donations.

The gift is divided into:
- $1.2 million for the endowed political science chair, which comes with an $800,000 state match.
- $360,000 for an endowed chemistry professorship, which has a $240,000 state match.
- $250,000 for student-athlete scholarships.
- $100,000 for aerospace/Air Force ROTC scholarships.
- $90,000 for the College of Arts and Sciences dean’s Excellence Fund.
