Jindal to campaign for congressman

Gov. Bobby Jindal is hitting the campaign trail Monday in Missouri.

Jindal plans to attend two fundraisers for Kenny Hulshof, a Republican congressman who is running for governor.

Hulshof also is getting help from President Bush.

The president is scheduled to attend a fundraiser Friday for Hulshof.

The governor’s press secretary, Melissa Sellers, said Jindal is participating in fundraisers only on Monday.

Storm debris costly in restoring coast

Using storm debris to restore Louisiana’s deteriorating coast is costly, one of the governor’s aides told lawmakers Friday.

State Sen. Mike Michot, R-Lafayette, wanted to know if the yard debris from hurricanes Gustav and Ike could be put to use.

“Can this be utilized in our coastal restoration efforts ... similar to what we do with our Christmas trees?” he asked.

Garrett Graves with the Governor’s Office of Coastal Activities said debris and Christmas trees are not a cost-effective way to restore coastal areas.

He said the Christmas tree program is valuable because it informs citizens about the eroding coastline’s plight.
