Twenty-six more Louisiana parishes have been named federal disaster areas because of Hurricanes Gustav and Ike, and FEMA announced the opening of four new Disaster Recovery Centers, officials said Saturday.

The public assistance declaration for the federal disaster areas allows federal money to go to state and local governments, and to certain private nonprofits for emergency work and repair of disaster-damaged facilities. It does not mean individuals will receive federal financial help.

The Governor’s Office announced the following parishes are newly declared federal disasters because of one or both storms: Allen, Acadia, Avoyelles, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron, East Feliciana, Evangeline, Franklin, Iberia, Jefferson, Jefferson Davis, Lafayette, Lafourche, Orleans, Plaquemines, Rapides, Sabine, St. Charles, St. John the Baptist, St. Martin, St. Mary, St. Tammany, Terrebonne, Vermilion and Vernon.

FEMA also announced that it opened four new Disaster Recovery Centers to assist business owners and residents who were affected by either of this year’s hurricanes.

Fifteen centers are now open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., a FEMA news release says. Residents and business owners can meet with representatives from the state, FEMA and the U.S. Small Business Administration and Red Cross at the center.

Applicants can get and return disaster loan applications at the centers, the release says. The application must be completed for residents and business owners to be eligible for loans or other needs available through the state or non-profits.

Before visiting the center, applicants are encouraged to register online at www.fema.gov and bring their registration number to the centers, the release says. Applicants do not have to visit the centers in their own parishes.

  • Ascension Parish: Old All Star Building, 13192 Airline Highway, Gonzales.
