Departing East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Doug Moreau confirmed Wednesday what campaign finance reports recently revealed: He is backing criminal defense lawyer Hillar Moore to replace him.

Moreau, who has been district attorney since 1991 and leaves office at the end of the year, said he and Moore have a longstanding relationship that dates back to when Moreau was an assistant district attorney and Moore was an investigator in the office.

“I’m supporting Hillar. I have very high regard for him,’’ Moreau, a Republican, said of his Democratic friend. “It’s nothing against his opponent.’’

Moore’s opponent is lawyer Dan Claitor, a Republican. The election is Oct. 4.

Moore said he is humbled by Moreau’s endorsement.

“It’s one I surely welcome. It’s a tremendous boost for my campaign,’’ he said. “It’s a reflection of how Doug wants to see the office run in the future.’’

A campaign finance report that Moore filed Friday indicates the Doug Moreau Campaign Account made a $5,000 contribution to Moore’s election effort on Aug. 25.

Claitor took the high road Tuesday when asked about the contribution.

“I haven’t asked Doug for a contribution,’’ Claitor said.

Moore said he hopes the 120 employees in the District Attorney’s Office will support him.
