LAFAYETTE — Seven people have applied to replace District 6 Councilman Bruce Conque, who is resigning Oct. 1 to take a job at the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce.

Conque, who announced his resignation in July, is in the first year of his second term.

His replacement would serve until a special election next year.

Seven people submitted letters of intent for the temporary City-Parish Council appointment by the Monday deadline:
  • Todd C. Elliot, a radio talk show host and vocal opponent of the city’s red light/speeding cameras.
  • Lafayette lawyer Judith Kennedy.
  • Businessman Richard Prevost.
  • Raymond “Sam” Doré, who ran against Conque last year.
  • Lewis Kellogg, a resident who rarely misses a council meeting and regularly offers comment on issues before the council.
  • Michele Ezell, co-owner of Tsunami sushi restaurant and a member of Downtown Lafayette Unlimited.
  • Lafayette lawyer John Bernhardt, who has been active in the local and state Democratic Party.
The council will meet behind closed doors later this month to interview the applicants and is scheduled to vote Oct. 7 on the appointment, City-Parish Council Chairman Don Bertrand said.

He said the new member will most likely be sworn in at the beginning of the Oct. 7 meeting and begin serving immediately.

The person the council chooses for the interim appointment will remain until a special election in April 2009 and will be barred from running for the office.

District 6 is an area in central Lafayette bounded roughly by Ambassador Caffrey Parkway to the west, University Avenue to the east, Johnston Street to the south, and Eraste Landry Road and Cameron Street to the north. Conque said he decided to step down because the time demands of his new marketing and government affairs job at the Chamber of Commerce will keep him from devoting due attention to the council seat.

Though he announced his resignation in July, Conque said he chose to stay on the council through September to help guide a council of new faces through the yearly budget process, which wraps up this month.
