Some cable TV back in service

More than one-third of cable and Internet services are back up in the Baton Rouge region and surrounding areas, Sharon Kleinpeter, Cox Greater Louisiana vice president of public affairs, said Friday.

“Things are progressing very well,” she said. “As the (electric) power goes up, it makes it quicker for us to get up.”

Customers are being asked not to pile up debris from Hurricane Gustav near or under the pedestals or nodes by streets and in backyards, Kleinpeter said. As for downed cable lines, “please don’t touch or move them, just give us a call,” she said, at (877) 556-7815 or (225) 615-1000.

About 400 people are on the ground working in crews to restore services, she said.

“We are following Entergy,” she said. “They gave us their (priority) plan. That helps us better go out and follow them.”

On Tuesday, the region was nearly 100 percent without services. “We will be 100 percent (back up) when power is 100 percent,” she said.

In some cases where cable is restored, but power is not up, customers can use generators to hook up.

The first step is to plug computer, television, digital converter and modem lines into the generator.

Then connect corded phone and computer lines directly to the modem phone jacks.

If the Cox lines are intact, customers should receive services.

However, if customers’ services are down, they will not be charged for the time period, Kleinpeter said.

“There are no charges while there’s outages,” she said. “We will credit customers for the outages. There are no late fees right now.”
