Nicholls in flux; Thibodaux struggling

THIBODAUX — Resuming classes Monday would be a “best-case scenario” for Nicholls State University, which sustained roof and other building damage from Hurricane Gustav, a university spokeswoman said Wednesday.
“It all hinges on availability of services: water, electricity, phones,” said Renee Piper, director of university relations. It’s not just services to the campus, but services to the community.”
Piper said university officials would huddle Friday and make a decision about when to resume classes.
Information will be posted at http://www.nicholls.edu as soon as it is available, she said, but added many people are without power. The university also is working to repair its phone system.
All custodians, maintenance workers and their supervisors should report to campus immediately with their credentials, she said.
Police officers are posted at main entrances to campus, monitoring who goes in and out. A supermarket and home improvement store selling generators were the only stores up and running Wednesday in the city limits, Thibodaux police spokesman Lt. Sam Pruitt said.
He said he knew of two gas stations selling gasoline.
A curfew is still in place from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., but residents who evacuated are welcome to come back home during daytime hours, Pruitt said.
Most of the roads had been cleared as of Wednesday afternoon, he said.
Electricity could be out for weeks. “We have no definite answer from Entergy on that at all,” Pruitt said. “It’s just a lot of rumors right now.”
Thibodaux Regional Medical Center is operating its emergency room only, hospital marketing director Toni Martinez said.
The hospital remained open during the storm using generator power and successfully housed 60 patients, she said.
“We’re asking that they come for emergencies only,” she said of current hospital operations.
