Tornado kills 2 in Evangeline Parish
Two Evangeline Parish residents died and another was injured early Wednesday when a tornado demolished a mobile home off La. 104 near Mamou.
The deaths came in a day filled with tornado warnings and reported touchdowns across Acadiana while the remnants of Hurricane Gustav moved out of the area.
In Mamou, a man estimated to be his 50s and a 21-year-old woman were killed inside a residence on L.D. Verette Road. Strong winds hit the area about 3:30 a.m., said Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Keith Dupre.
Dupre said another man, estimated to be in his 20s, was also in the residence when the winds hit. The second man was rushed by ambulance to Eunice Medical Center with undetermined injuries. Dupre said another mobile home nearby was destroyed but there was apparently no one inside. The victims names had not been released.
Most of Acadiana remained under a tornado watch on Wednesday.
The National Weather Service was investigating at least four reported tornadoes — three between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in the Arnaudville and Leonville areas and one near Crowley.
A twister in Crowley was reported across the street from the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office on Capital Avenue.
“We all scrambled when we heard our roof shaking,” Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Maxine Trahan said. “We were running for cover, everybody trying to get under the same desk.”
Trahan said no injuries or major structural damage was reported.
Tornado touchdowns in St. Landry Parish were reported between Leonville and Port Barre, on Hebert Road in Arnaudville, and along La. 31 near Arnaudville, according to the National Weather Service.
St. Landry Parish President Don Menard said the storms caused limited structural damage but no known injuries.
