I-55 southbound shut down
PONCHATOULA — Traffic is backed up three to five miles along Interstate 55 this afternoon as motorists are attempting to travel south and finding that State Police closed the interstate just south of Ponchatoula at the high rise bridge to all but essential traffic.
Ponchatoula Police Chief Bry Layrisson said he does not know when the high-rise would fully reopen to traffic, because that call is up to State Police.
Meanwhile, although Ponchatoula is without electrical power Tuesday afternoon, Layrisson said, all the city’s roads are clear and its water and sewage services are up and working.
