National Guard deploys to N.O.

GONZALES — More than 200 vehicles and about 1,500 Louisiana National Guardsmen left the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales this morning, bound for the Morial Convention Center in New Orleans.

Once there, the soldiers will fan across the metro area to assist in hurricane preparations local authorities. If the storm comes, the troops will return to the Morial Center.

The Guard convoys began at 10:30 this morning and were to stagger departures every 15 to 30 minutes to minimize congestion on Interstate 10.
